This workshop gave our participants a momentous boost of energy levels, and we are pleased to share our key highlights from the session.
The ACHS Improvement Academy (IA) had a very productive session in our recent ‘Creating Energy for Change’ workshop, led by world-renowned change expert, Professor Helen Bevan, Strategic Advisor at NHS Horizons. With over 30 years’ experience working in quality improvement, Professor Bevan helps inspire and mobilise thousands of teams across the NHS, England and internationally to enact positive transformations in their delivery of care.
This timely workshop focused on teaching participants the importance of energy. It taught energy-creating tactics and how to liberate the natural energy of people who work in healthcare. Participants were able to take home a powerful framework for understanding, analysing and unleashing energy for change.
Why is energy relevant?
In the dynamic and ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, change is not just an inevitable process but a necessary one to improve patient outcomes and enhance the quality of care. Energy for change is about building the capacity and drive of a team, organisation, or system to act and make the differences necessary to achieve its goals.
“What the research shows us is that there is a statistically significant relationship between high energy and high performance,” said Professor Bevan.
Healthcare professionals have been facing unprecedented challenges, with immense workloads and prolonged stress leading to burnout and exhaustion. We have seen patterns of early retirement, job transitions, people leaving, and jobs vacancies are at a record high.
“The willingness of employees to support the kind of organisational organisation, enterprise wide change initiatives has fallen drastically since the pandemic across all sectors,” said Professor Bevan.
To addresses this issue, Professor Bevan’s workshop participants explored the different categories of energies and the significance of each in driving and sustaining change initiatives within individuals and organisations.
Resistance to change is strongly tied with energy levels, and how different types of energies are harnessed. These different types of energies – social, spiritual, physical, intellectual, and psychological, all have an important role to play and work in synergy with one another.
By the end of the workshop, participants reported higher energy levels.
“Thank you, Helen – the ‘Creating Energy for Change’ virtual training was an enjoyable session, certainly highlighting the need for a balance of energies that are required to activate positive morale and propel quality projects forward.” – Cheree Morgan, Quality Specialist, Icon Group
