Insights from our exclusive Masterclass with Dimitry Tran.
Over 500 Members across Australia and internationally, registered for our exclusive Masterclass, featuring Improvement Academy Director Associate Professor Bernie Harrison and esteemed guest speaker Mr Dimitry Tran, Co-founder of harrison.ai.
Titled, "Lessons from deploying clinical AI at scale," Mr Tran explores how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming healthcare by enhancing decision-making and improving patient outcomes in fields like radiology.
Currently there is a global shortage of radiologists and pathologists, with an estimated 1.5 million clinicians missing worldwide. This gap creates a significant challenge, as it can take 15 years to train each clinician. This shortage of clinicians is driving the adoption of AI, not only in radiology but also in other medical fields.
Drawing on real-world examples, Mr Tran advocates for AI as an essential support tool for clinicians, benefiting radiologists in drafting reports, triaging patient cases and aiding emergency department doctors in after-hours situations when specialist advice may not be readily available.

The concept of ‘Clinical-grade generative AI’ was introduced, highlighting its potential to exceed human performance in accuracy while complementing clinicians' expertise. However, Mr Tran also stressed the importance of robust validation, ethical considerations, and regulatory compliance to ensure AI solutions meet the high standards required in healthcare settings. Mr Tran is optimistic that clinicians would not be replaced by AI as there are issues with AI ‘hallucinating’, that is if it meets a novel or rare problem it has the potential to make a wrong diagnosis. It is to be considered as a support to clinical diagnosis, or a ‘second pair of eyes’.

The diversity of experiences shared amongst participants during the Masterclass provided a unique snapshot of how organisations are beginning to leverage clinical AI. Participants who are already using AI solutions revealed their application across a variety of areas, such as piloting AI in radiology to enhance imaging workflows to optimising coding for revenue cycle and customer relationship management. AI was also being reported by participants on a daily basis to support administrative tasks such as note taking, increasing time available for other activities.
