ACHS Improvement Academy Director, Associate Professor Bernie Harrison joined Adjunct Professor Kylie Ward, CEO Australian College of Nursing (ACN) at the ACN Mid-Career Nursing Program, last month in Melbourne. Prof Ward and her team are inspired to increase the recognition of nurses and women in society, with the ACN now Australia’s beacon for Nurse Leadership.
Prof Harrison delivered the first day of the program with a workshop on Leadership and Governance for quality improvement and patient safety and how successful implementation of the National Model Clinical Governance Framework is an enabler of success.
Prof Harrison had the following key takeaways from her session:
- Leadership in quality improvement and patient safety is everyone's business.
- Interdisciplinary teamwork is essential in driving service improvement, nurses can and should lead as coordinators of care.
- The front-line clinical teams need to drive service improvement and organise into improvement teams supported by senior leadership.
- Put the consumer/patient at the heart of everything you do, small acts of kindness matter.
- Review all the current rules and policies that have the potential to make patients and their carers feel unwelcome in your organisations.
