Associate Professor Bernie Harrison recently led a custom workshop on Incident Management for staff at Danila Dilba Health Service in Darwin.
Danila Dilba Health Service is an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation that offers culturally appropriate and comprehensive primary health care and community services to Biluru people in the greater Darwin region.
Danila Dilba’s unique service plays a crucial role in supporting the health and well-being of the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The focus is on providing and advocating for services that are responsive to local needs, supporting equity, empowerment, community self-determination and collaboration.
Incident Management is a key part of patient safety, and it is crucial for organisations to be able to have systems in place that address the occurrence of adverse events. The workshop with Danila Dilba focused on analysing trend data related to primary care measures and conducting sentinel event reviews. A key point highlighted in the workshop was moving beyond less effective interventions, such as individual staff education, towards robust recommendations that address systemic issues. This approach aims to create more effective solutions for improving patient safety and care quality.
The workshop received strong support from Danila Dilba’s leadership, including the CEO, Clinic Managers, the Clinical Governance team, and the Chief Medical Officer. While there, Associate Professor Harrison had the opportunity to tour the clinics, meeting staff and clients. This visit provided valuable insights into the day-to-day operations and the vital community-focused care delivered by Danila Dilba.
