Why Measurement in Healthcare Matters

Measurement and data are the backbone of quality improvement.

Earlier this year, the ACHS Improvement Academy introduced its new course, ‘Measurement for Improvement’, facilitated by Associate Professor Peter Hibbert - Program Manager at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation, Faculty of Medicine Macquarie University.

Our first session run in May, brought together diverse cohort across Australia including an ACT community health centre, as well as participants from Indonesia.

The training introduced measurement tools and how they can be incorporated into everyday practice. Participants reported positive feedback, sharing that they would be more proactive in utilising data for improvement, and applying the tools introduced during the session into their workplaces. Medication safety was one of the key areas identified by participants where the application of measurement for improvement could have a significant impact.

Great explanation. Pitched at the right level and can take away useful tools and information back to my workplace.

Why is Measurement important?

Measurement is critical to quality improvement. Without it, efforts to improve systems or processes lack direction and effectiveness. Data not only helps in accurately identifying problems but also assists in prioritising quality improvement initiatives and provides an objective assessment of whether changes have led to real improvements. Collecting and analysing data are therefore central to the function of quality improvement in any health service (Agency for Clinical Innovation, 2008).

Traditional methods like averages and before and after measures are limited in their ability to provide comprehensive insights. Our course emphasises the use of effective measurement tools, such as run charts and Statistical Process Control (SPC) charts. These tools enable participants to track performance over time, identify variations, and make data-driven decisions.
